Could donuts be the new cupcake?

These beauties can be found at Dough

My "work" on The Cooking Channels Unique Sweets has enabled me to fly all over the country,

(even bravely crossing the border into Canada) to experience some amazing donuts.

Do you think I am using to strong of word such as amazing to describe the donuts that have graced my taste buds and sent me into a sweet heaven that existed amongst fried yeast doughs and glazed confection paradise? If that is the case, then I feel badly for you because you just have not had a really good donut.

Donuts are pretty decieving, they look innocent enough and just how hard could it be to fry up some dough and glaze it? Well let me just tell you something, once you have had a really well made donut, you'll not only understand these donut words of which I speak, you will never step foot into any donut franchise that is attached to a ice cream or taco joint.

Because how much food do you need in one stop?

The first donut place that I went to that opened my eyes and tastebuds to a really well made donut miracle was Top pot in Seattle, Washington. This place stole my heart with their pink feather donut.

Instagram - All hail the great & powerful pink feather boa donut from Top pot in

If I was a donut, I would be this donut. True story.

Their maple bar is another donut miracle. A team mate from The Seattle Seahawks famously broke into Top pot when they were closed looking for a maple bar like a junkie on the prowl for their much needed fix. I'd do the same thing and so would you after you've had one and know the glory that is Top Pot.

As food fad's come and go, we all witnessed the rise of the cupcake empire, and it's kind of hard to bash a cupcake, it's a wonderful treat. I love them and I am sure that you do too.

But having a talent for making a really good donut shows some real mad skills.

Working with a yeast dough is working with a living thing and you really have to know just what the hell you are doing to turn out an amazing product. And being capable of making a really good cake donut is the same thing, real mad skills.

Go ahead, go make your own damn donuts and let me know how that turns out. I am in no way doubting your donut making skills, but taste one from a place that makes large numbers of hand forged donuts and compare.

Instagram - @Toppot it fits perfect! Many many thanks!

I love these damn donuts so much I proudly wear my Top Pot t-shirt around town.

Here is my fellow partner in crime from Unique Sweets, Zac Young and I really enjoying a donut miracle in Orange County, California at a new place called Sidecar Doughnuts.

We made the drive down to this place from Los Angeles and as we were snailing our way through the ever famous traffic of California, we both questioned if this drive was going to be worth donuts.

I would gladly crawl to this place knowing what awaits me at the end of my... erm... crawl.

Sidecar donuts frys up their donuts in small batches on the hour, so you are going to end up with the freshest donut possible. And even though this phrase is wildy overused... prepare to have your mind blown. True story.

So as it seems the cupcake fad has quietly died down but not leaving anytime soon, I would gladly welcome the doughnut as the next oh my god, I must have something sweet and good and now, dammit! in the place of a cupcake. No offense cup cake.

Now I want you to notice the spelling of donut, that's how you know it to usually be, correct? Donut. Spot a donut place that carefully spells it Doughut, just prepare yourself to be amazed at the difference, because they are working on a whole other realm of doughnut making. They clearly have a dough that they are so proud of, it goes into the spelling of their product.

Feel free to use this difference in spelling as somehwhat of a code, d-o-n-u-t, keep on walking, not worth the calories, d-o-u-g-h-n-u-t, get your ass in there and get one of everything.

You only live once.
